Reflections

It’s so hard these days to remain positive and encouraging and upbeat, isn’t it? Everywhere we turn, there is some negative or horrific or heart-breaking news. And yet, we trudge on. Turn the next page. Finish one project and move on to the next. Respond to that next email. Answer that next call. Run to that next appointment. Check that next thing off the to-do list.

But, today, I stopped. I stopped and reflected on what is really going on in my little piece of the world, in my community, in our school district, in our state, in our country and in the world. So much negativity. So much division. So much unhappiness. So much. But, it’s just too much. It’s overwhelming. It’s maddening. It’s just too much.

So, what do we do? Keep feeding that negativity? Buy into the environment of constant complaining or frustration? No, we don’t. And, I realized that as cliché as it sounds, I need to focus on the positive. We all do. Somewhere. Some little nugget of positivity.

Maybe it’s just my tea was perfect this morning (and really helped my sore throat). Maybe it’s my youngest daughter giggling at wearing two backpacks today. Maybe it’s the warmth of the sun as I sit at my computer and type. Maybe it’s my elderly, dying dog wagging her tail even though she can no longer see or hear me very well. Maybe, just maybe, there is some good out there every day and we need to find it. Even if it’s just one minor thing. Because the world is struggling right now. My little world is chaotic. My community is hurting. Our school district, state and country are divided. And, the world? Just too much violence.

But, if I hold on to that one little piece of happy, that minor thing that made me smile or laugh, it just may help me feel like I can take that next step. And, maybe that next step brings a little piece of happy to someone else.

My little piece of happy? My daughter’s giggling made this morning a little brighter. And, I’m holding on to that for as long as I can.
